Why Stay at the Alaska Glacier Lodge
Everyone has different experiences and you can’t plan every moment of magic down to the minute, but my time at the Alaska Glacier Lodge was amazing. One morning I woke up to a moose in the wildflowers outside my cabin. Another night I looked outside and got to watch the Northern Lights from my deck. I know that won’t be the case for every visit, but it certainly colored my stay at the Alaska Glacier Lodge. I was here enjoying a 3 day Palmer itinerary and only got the Lights one night.
My cabin was really wonderful too. With a private porch, fireplace sitting area and a dry bar/kitchenette, it was perfect for starting and ending my days in Palmer. The cabins are well maintained and appropriately decorated for adding to the glacier experiences you have here in this part of Alaska.
Alaska Glacier Lodge Cabin Details
All of the rooms at the Alaska Glacier Lodge are actually cabins, so all accommodations are private and not connected to the main lodge building. You can book a king, queen or two queen cabin. I really like the cabins for a very Alaskan, homey experience. They have small gas fireplaces as a primary heat source and nice bathrooms. The kitchenette space (not for cooking) is more of a desk setup, which is great if you’re here for a while writing the Great Alaskan Novel we’re all waiting for…
The cabins really are set up for relaxing though with a seating area inside and a nice front porch. It’s known as Alaska’s premier heli-lodge, so you can sit on the deck and watch the helicopters take off throughout the day. If it’s a quiet flight day, even better! Each cabin looks out towards the Knik River Valley and the beautiful Talkeetna Mountains.
Things to Do at the Alaska Glacier Lodge
Be sure to enjoy the experience of staying at the Alaska Glacier Lodge by taking part in all the great things to do here. Of course, helicopter flightseeing with Alaska Helicopter Tours (onsite) to the different glaciers is amazing (landing on the Knik Glacier is really cool), but there are quite a few tour options directly from the Lodge. You can do glacier paddleboarding, dogsledding and heli-hiking too.
For free activities at the Alaska Glacier Lodge, there are hiking trails that lead away from the property to explore the woods and down towards the Knik River. My favorite free thing to do anywhere, and I had a great experience doing it here, is watching the Northern Lights from the Alaska Glacier Lodge. The lights are visible most frequently until late May and then start up again at the end of August. Remember though, just because you’re in Alaska during these times it doesn’t mean there will be a Northern Lights display.

- hiking – between state parks and forest lands, there are lots of trails

Dining in Palmer
I’ll be honest, Seward is not my favorite town for cuisine in Alaska. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, but its options are limited. I always like to set realistic expectations for anyone visiting a place for the first time. Having said that, here are our top picks for dining in Palmer:
- Feather and Flour – farm to table dining w/ a prix fixe menu
- Palmer Ale House – awesome pizza and more
- Turkey Red – great deli sandwiches and to-go meals
- Matanuska Brewing Co – burgers, salads, beer and more
- La Fiesta – a good solid Mexican restaurant
