We love getting to stay in cozy cabins, especially in the winter months, and cozy is just how I would describe our stay at Peak Lodging, the small cabin neighborhood near Hatcher Pass in Palmer. Whether it’s summertime and you are spending several days hiking and fishing around the Palmer area or if it’s the dead of winter and you’re heading up to the Skeetawk Ski Area in Hatcher Pass, Peak Lodging is a great location to be based. Are you looking for a cabin near Hatcher Pass that has a full kitchen, wonderful outdoor space and is an ideal getaway to the mountains? Peak Lodging is it.
Now, before we get too far into it, Peak Lodging is NOT a cabin resort or hotel, but is a small collection of independent modern cabins set together on a hillside with a beautiful view of the Chugach Mountains. If that sounds good, keep reading and please let us know if you have any questions, either about the accommodations or things to do around the area. Please leave a comment or send us a note so we can help you plan a wonderful trip to Alaska!

Why Choose the Peak Lodging Cabins
Getting to visit Palmer and have activities in Hatcher Pass is always a family favorite for us. We spend all day out and about, hiking or skiing, so it’s always nice to come back to a hotel or cabin that is calm and relaxing. The Peak Lodging cabins are really close to Hatcher Pass which is perfect for being able to have a getaway just at the edge of both recreation and civilization. There are three cabins in this little neighborhood and they’re ideal for either a winter or summer escape. There is enough space that you and your family can function well without being on top of each other, and yet it’s still cozy and gives the Alaskan cabin feel you hope for.
Another thing that really made staying at Peak Lodging in Hatcher Pass a great experience for us was having a full kitchen at our disposal. Whether you’re a local that wants a getaway or if you’re visiting from the Lower 48, it’s nice to be able to cook for yourself while you’re traveling. There are some great restaurants in Palmer, but we prefer to eat in as much as possible. The cabin kitchens are fully stocked with dishes and cookware so you can actually function just like you’re at home. You’ll need to do a bit of a grocery shop before you get to your cabin, including getting some staples like butter or cooking spray (don’t forget them!) but once you’re settled in you can easily slip into the Alaskan mountain frame of mind that makes Peak Lodging cabins so nice.
And I would be remiss to not mention the wildlife all around this lovely little cabin neighborhood. Birds are a given, including owls, but also moose. We saw several moose all around the area, from up at Government Peak Recreation Area to directly in front of our cabin. Each day we actually had three moose wander through and we could just watch them from our deck or the comfort of our kitchen. That’s the Alaskan cabin experience I think we all hope for.

Peak Lodging Cabins Amenities
I’ve mentioned how great it is to have full kitchens in the cabins at Peak Lodging in Hatcher Pass, because it allows you to feel at home and really relax. The other homey touch that may be more important, depending on how long your trip is, is the in-cabin laundry. A stacked washer and dry in the closet is a bonus when you’ve been having an active trip, whether it’s because you’re gotten muddy hiking up to Golf Cord Lake in Hatcher Pass or because you’ve had sweaty adventures in the snow. When we visit Anchorage or Palmer on a trip we usually end up having a day at the laundromat, but not when we have it in the cabin! I know that everyone travels differently, but for us this is a big win.
Another amenity that we enjoyed at our Peak Lodging cabin was the selection of games and books in the cupboard. In the winter you may find that you have a lot of downtime during the fewer daylight hours, so having something to engage with others is great. There are no televisions in the cabins at Peak Lodging, so you’ll need to enjoy reading and games… or you can bring your own tablet or laptop if you want to watch a movie or binge watch a show on a snowy night. The wifi is very strong and plenty fast for streaming if you need it.

Cabin Details at Peak Lodging, Hatcher Pass
There are three cabins at Peak Lodging and each is nicely appointed with really comfortable beds (two queens in each cabin), lot’s of cozy blankets, a full kitchen with a sit-at counter, a mud room entry, and a full deck. There are little differences between the cabins, but in general they’re the same. Each has a beautiful view looking south towards the Chugach Mountains, and each has its designated parking spot.
Now, this may seem like a little thing, but it’s actually a huge win: there are so many pegs and hooks to hang things up. Hotels are severly lacking with coat hooks and hangers, and if you’re here exploring Hatcher Pass and all around the MatSu Valley, then you know that you’re living in layers, even in the summertime. In winter, you arrive and start to unpeal in the mud room, leaving your shoes and jacket there, then inside you have a sweatshirt, snow pants, hats and gloves to take off. The cabins at Peak Lodging aren’t huge with endless coat closets, so they’ve been thoughtfully given on-wall storage and it makes all the difference in keeping things tidy over the course of your stay.

Location of the Peak Lodging Cabins
Getting to Peak Lodging in Palmer: The cabins at Peak Lodging are located about 10-15 minutes from downtown Palmer in the Fishhook area near Hatcher Pass. They’re far enough from town that you feel secluded but close enough that you can easily run to the grocery store or go out for dinner.
If you’re staying at Peak Lodging for easy access to recreation, the Government Peak Recreation Area, which is full of hiking/walking trails, Nordic ski trails, and more, is less than five minutes away. Skeetawk Ski Area at Hatcher Pass is a little over ten minutes away, and the roads are well cleared in winter. For hiking, the Gold Mint Trail is 15 minutes up into Hatcher Pass, Independence Mine State Historical Park is 25 minute into the Pass, and the Archangel Valley is 30 minutes away. I love the location of Peak Lodging, and it’s simply perfect for either a winter or summer trip.

More Things to Do around Palmer
Palmer is a really cool, beautiful town. Located in the MatSu Valley northeast of Anchorage, you’ll find a very walkable downtown area with parks, shops, galleries, three breweries, bars and restaurants. Here are a few additional things you can add to your time in Palmer to make the most of your visit:
- hiking – between state parks and forest lands, there are lots of trails
- fishing – from salmon to trout, there are plenty of options for rivers, lakes and guided trips
- ATV tours – the Knik River is a local favorite for off-road exploring
- Matanuska Glacier – not far from Palmer is the only glacier you can drive directly up to
- Agritourism – Palmer is farm country, from musk ox and reindeer to giant prize winning vegetables

Dining in Palmer
I’ll be honest, Seward is not my favorite town for cuisine in Alaska. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, but its options are limited. I always like to set realistic expectations for anyone visiting a place for the first time. Having said that, here are our top picks for dining in Palmer:
- Feather & Flour – farm to table dining w/ a prix fixe menu
- Palmer Alehouse – awesome pizza and more
- Turkey Red – great deli sandwiches and to-go meals
- Matanuska Brewing Co – burgers, salads, beer and more ** They have the BEST chili!
- Garcia’s Grill – a good solid Mexican restaurant (favorite restaurant in Palmer)
